@sun
>the value proposition of decentralized is weakened a lot
The value of decentralization is still the same.
However the perceived value of decentralization will change in people's mind, because comfort and many other tricks.

It's the same issue in any system where people can't predict obvious outcomes.
Like people refusing NFT for their art business. Or crypto to solve the problem of banks. Or new protocols like gnunet etc...
@sun
>and you can’t make them matter.
It doesn't matter because they don't see the damage it's causing as all the damage is indirect.

>Give people a big decently run locked down service and people don’t want anything else
You forgot to add, free of cost service.
That's the main issue that many gov should have acted from the beginning as they were from the start not financially and are still not financially viable.
The only reason they still exist now is because under the disguise of creating value from advertisement etc... it's a crowd control tool/experiment for govs globally.

@sun idk, i think fedi is functionally different compared to centralized services, and most people don't care for that. to me fedi more feels like an async irc, which is nice if you are interested in long term interactions that have a bit of depth. centralized services always have the feeling of standing in a limitless crowd of buskers competing for coins.

@sun a lot of the people who came here during the twitter migrations were sold on it being "twitter but not censored", and so they'll always naturally compare it to twitter, and when twitter "gets better" they will abandon it

I was sold on this place as being the closest thing I could get to old internet culture, and I'd say it still is, which is one of the reasons I stay
@sun Alt fedi is slowly trudging to the state where you made a node in and helped the network out of, mostly barren. Twitter has always had the massive advantage of being a monopoly in the social networking game so observers + people peer pressured into joining will always go on it and have a look around. My very subjective opinion on the matter is Twitter's userbase only changed by bringing previously banned users back on the site. Twitter in it of itself didn't have to do anything to actually have to compete.
@sun Fedi has gone downhill a lot for me but that's mostly because most of the people I like don't post anymore

I tried xitter last year and nobody was interested in having normal conversations, totally rancid posting culture. Also re censorship I got a slap on the wrist for using the word "faggot" in a post
@sun i just tried to get one of the christian foxgirl posters to try it here but he just said he only uses X.
its become very hard to convince people when X isnt significantly shooting itself in the mouth anymore.
even though nonsense bans arent uncommon they're much more rare nowadays.
the last acc i lost was years ago when elon took over.
i'd have been banned 10 times already under dorsey
