@kaia wonder if the redot fork also has this problem
last statistic i saw about gun deaths in the US was the majority was suicides.
suicides as well as murders will happen anyway, people will just use other tools.
otoh, guns are about the only effective means of self defense against knives because they are distance weapons and knives are real killers.
gun control means that the population is defenseless against any attacker. bad guys will have them anyway (cf. europe) and an armed population means attackers likely will be shot in the process.
@littletecky i merely try to claw back the rainbow as symbol of higher powers and wonder of nature like it ought to be.
@Dicey idk, the twink looks like from somewhere north africa or maybe middle east, certainly not roman/greek.
this is kinda "we found a grave with jewlery, clearly this warrior was trans"
i hate this brainrot shit.
@Dicey
tfw there exist two perfectly fine 3d models of how he looked, made in his day.
covering some select cities in glass is becoming an increasingly attractive option.
@scathach @genmaicha so, i'll certainly take the verbosity of go over something using only a third of lines but with crazy syntax and semantics. especially if i have to deal with other peoples code.
interestingly, this mainly depends on the size of the core language. i find it relatively easy to understand the very boiled down lisp-like languages pretty well. even if you can do meta-programming with them, in the end everything is just a function call, not something special.
@scathach @genmaicha no, but i'm not going to learn another language for this problem-space. actually i like go because i can fit it in my brain and understand code if you wake me up at 3am. i'm not all that smart, after all :)
i think that all the features most languages now have are detrimental. i've seen so many bad "clever" constructs in other languages, it's nice of there isn't much wiggle room for this (even if there is much bad go code around now by people using it like java).
@scathach @genmaicha i think i ignored D because of being quasi-closed-source for such a long time.
@scathach @genmaicha i have never really missed enums, consts of a bespoke type usually suffice. go is garbage collected c more than anything else.
what makes go good is having a rather sane ecosystem. the compiler is sane, cross-compiling (pure go) works out of the box, the module system with no central repository but checksums is how it should be everywhere.
it's not 100%, but a very good 80% language, especially for the things it was designed for.
gcc-go needs more love though.
israel putting high dose roundup on libanon soil is pretty much the definition of genocide, again. could just stop the charade and move to salting the fields directly.
@genmaicha @Ghislaine if it's any solace millenials "doing things" was mostly getting drunk, mindless consumption and mental problems.. most interesting stuff for me was concerts and a bit of travel.
my protip would certainly be to maximize the memory-creating good clean fun (travel, interesting hobbies) in your 20s. or starting a family, but finding a match seems to be even more shit now (might be easier with hobbies where you meet people in RL).
which software do you use every day that sucks? (except browsers)
@harblinger wrf is going on with those necks
someone asked me about finance software and i'm not sure if i want to tell them about gnucash because then i'm going to forever have to support them while knowing only very basic stuff about double entry bookkeeping.
otoh, they'll throw out a couple of hundred bucks for some shitty cloud service otherwise..
@sun @disclosetv @jeremiah @toiletpaper fish gods are found in innsmouth
@sun as far as i understand it, anything which changes the velocity or position - any measurement of the state requires per definition interaction between the object that is measured and the tool used for measurement. observer is just a shitty term imo, if a particle crashes into another one that is also "measuring" it's properties.
get ready for agentic coding!
