@sun @Leyonhjelm @echo I’m a leftoid by biology (I max out the Openness scale on the Five Factor personality inventory) but I grew up in a red state and have some appreciation for nuance, I guess. along with having seen conservative adjacent people be good for the right reasons with my own two eyes. I also have been extremely wary of groupthink almost my whole life, and there’s a whole lot of it happening in what passes for the American left.

@toiletpaper that approach is hard for me but I’m slowly adapting. my hardwired best-case scenario is to put down roots and know people really well such that we become ride or die, but it’s just not the hand I’ve been dealt.

@sun @apropos I’ve read some articles and papers about the effort to develop technique for taming children who exhibit clear psychopathic traits from a very early age. fascinating shit. seems to maybe work more than not at all based on the very small amount of data accrued so far.

@sun @apropos there’s a certain subset of human beings (across all cultures, rightoid and leftoid alike) who are especially susceptible to being cult followers, I guess the main question is what percent of humanity do they constitute and how many of them are running various organs of social and logistical control in any given scenario

@sun for me the tipping poi t was understanding that one doesn’t have to Be Racist™ or Be Fascist™ or even have strong authoritarian leanings to do that, because people exist in different epistemological bubbles, it’s literally possible to not be a piece of shit and come to the conclusion Trump is worth a try, even when he has a large bloc of pieces of shit backing him 1000%

@sun I’ve gotten to the point where, as someone who would never in a million years vote for Donald Fucking Trump as president, I think I finally get it. to the extent I’m able as somebody who is left-aligned at a bone deep level anyway (although still sorting out whether that means center-left statist or something more anarchist in nature.. I’m woefully deficient on theory)

@toiletpaper I’m not that far along yet but I’m getting there, especially with the sudden coordinated wave of ❝age verification❞ legislation in western ❝democracies❞ … been using LineageOS since it was CyanogenMod, ditched Play Services uhh like 5 years ago now? but my current setup still narcs. lately I’ve been thinking it’s time to do yet another round of purging untrustworthy apps. I already use CoMaps for offline navigation, that was a major switch.

@sun @anemone real talk… living in this place has taken years if not decades off my life from never-ending stress and bone-deep isolation among the crowd. the meds I have to take just to stay upright have major side effects but there’s no alternative. I’m never gonna make it out of here alive.

I feel like he’s kind of a character that’s mostly endemic to the US Northeast, and sometimes I do miss living there
