@WandererUber I'VE WORKED CONSTRUCTION, WHAT EXACTLY IS MEANT BY MODULAR HOMES?

nugger

12w

@WandererUber NAILED JOISTS ARE MADE AT A FACTORY AND SHIPPED IN, THE BUILDING CODE ALREADY MAKES THE BUILDING FAIRLY MODULAR AS IN EVERYTHING IS MADE OF KNOWN STANDARDIZED ASSEMBLIES THAT SLOT TOGETHER

nugger

12w

@WandererUber YOU MEAN LIKE THE HOUSE IS SEVERAL MANUFACTURED HOUSE STYLE ENCLOSURES SLID TOGETHER WITH PASSAGEWAYS IN BETWEEN THEM?

THE ONE BIG PROBLEM I SEE IS THE ROOFLINE WILL BE A MCMANSION STYLE LANDSCAPE OF HILLS AND VALLEYS THAT ARE A NIGHTMARE TO CLEAN, BUT MCMANSIONS ALREADY HAVE THAT

@nugger @WandererUber shipping containers can be used as homes

Wanderer atop the sea of clouds or whatever

12w

@SoylentGroyper @nugger has obvious downsides but perhaps someone will start making hoistable modules (steel frame, mount points for winches) in that form factor

@WandererUber @SoylentGroyper @nugger This is basically reinventing the doublewide/manufactured home, and the logistics chain for those is already well solved.

12w

@radians @SoylentGroyper @nugger I'm not too well-versed in how they are used, but they can't be stacked for example, can they?

12w

@WandererUber @SoylentGroyper @nugger i can't think of any that assemble as a 2 story unit and Im not sure HUD code allows for this. You would have a very narrow structure. There would also be a question of what to do with the second floor frame. In normal manufactured home construction the steel floor frame also serves as the transport conveyance.

@radians @WandererUber @SoylentGroyper SUPPOSE A DOUBLE WIDE DOUBLE TALL WITH PILLARS THAT ARE LIKE BASEMENT JACKS FOR SAGGING FOUNDATIONS

nugger

12w

@radians @WandererUber @SoylentGroyper THEN AGAIN HOW ARE YOU HAULING THE SECOND LAYER UP ON TOP OF THE FIRST
YOU NEED TO BRING A CRANE
THIS KINDA SUCKS

radians

@radians@poa.st remote

12w

@nugger @WandererUber @SoylentGroyper There's typically a crane on site anyway for the installation. the question would be about wind loading calculations and how much modification would have to be made to the base and foundation in order to not overturn.

@radians @WandererUber @SoylentGroyper IMAGINE IT JUST HAVING FUCKING BIG TRIANGLE CORNER BRACES THAT TAKE UP ALL THE LAWN AREA

Wanderer atop the sea of clouds or whatever

12w

@nugger @radians @SoylentGroyper what if you did it like this:

Soylent Groyp

12w

@WandererUber @nugger @radians reminds of Egyptian pyramid building theory
there are other ways, you could have a pile of sand, and pull the module up the pile,
or gradually raise it, like a car jack, and then put something below it, and repeat

Wanderer atop the sea of clouds or whatever

12w

@SoylentGroyper @nugger @radians if they kept the shipping container format and frame, but stopped forcing themselves to use actual containers (not cheap! Not made for living in!) they could make them with a bunch of, maybe temporary, structural enhancements that would allow the upper models to go on top, kind of like a self-building crane. Or to enable it to "car jack" itself more easily

A lot of stuff is possible. The sand thing is cool but the Egyptians had the advantage that it was a desert so it wasn't a big issue if you left big ass piles of sands everywhere.
I doubt that would be cheaper today than to just use a crane.

@WandererUber @nugger @radians the reason why a crane is bad, is that you depend on other people, which defeats the "life hack" effect. The ideal thing would be modules/trailers that a normal person can handle alone, with nothing but simple tools available without a license.
Building codes/zoning and all that, can be so bad that you need to apply for permission to live in an RV on your own land, it depends on the country&state. Movies are highly deceptive in showing us people having freedoms that we have long lost in real life.
There are these videos "I built my own home in a forest" or "I live in a cave in the woods", but I suspect all of them have an "untold story" behind them and are not actually something you can legally do.

@SoylentGroyper @WandererUber @radians HERE WE GO AGAIN WITH THE DIY SOLARPUNK STUFF

nugger

12w

@SoylentGroyper @WandererUber @radians WHICH REALLY PUTS US AT AN IMPASSE
BECAUSE WE ALREADY HAVE GOOD TECH FOR BOTH LARGE SCALE (PANEL COMMIEBLOCS) AND SMALL SCALE CONSTRUCTION
IT'S A QUESTION OF CODES AND WHAT THE STATE POWER WANTS OUT OF HOUSING WHICH IS A PROBLEM OF POLITICS AND LEADS TO SPECULATION OF WHAT THE HYPOTHETICAL WHEN WE WIN POLICIES SHOULD BE

Wanderer atop the sea of clouds or whatever

12w

@nugger @SoylentGroyper @radians You forget the people that have helped us out of similar pinches in several areas like pharmaceuticals, replacement parts for electronics, and transportation: the Chinese!

Code this, code that. If the Chinese catch wind of the single-family home modular construction trend, Vevor WILL start selling 100 ton DIY gantry cranes and I WILL be buying one
it'll all be okay

damn

@WandererUber @SoylentGroyper @radians YOU HAVE TO PAY $10000 FINE FOR VIOLATING THE ZONING LAW PLUS $300 FOR EVERY DAY YOU FAIL TO DEMOLISH AND REMOVE IT FROM YOUR PROPERTY

YOU DO AT LEAST OWN THE LAND YOU'VE PUT THIS OWN, RIGHT?
