@RustyCrab she got bronied
I went on Reddit one time.
Left what I felt was a helpful comment in a forum.
Got downvoted and hit with comments I didn't understand, such as "cuckoldry is actually an intellectual's fetish" and " wait until my wife's bull hears about this"
Successfully gatekept their community. Props.

@vriska @RustyCrab nothing has to be good in any way in its original form to make good jackoff material out of it
@vriska @RustyCrab I am not an HP fan but it is actually noticeably better children's fiction than anything else I've seen, she put a lot of work into worldbuilding and creative ideas and continuity.
@sun @vriska @RustyCrab check out Robert C. O'Brien.

well written children's lit is like katherine rundell. creative children's lit is like garth nix. hally port is neither

@ageha @RustyCrab @vriska not a lot but I lived with a couple that read the popular stuff. I am just not a childrens book fan and, to correct myself, I did read the first two to see what was up and the first two are not exceptional but are competent, but the later ones I had a friend go over them with me and they are impressively set up imo.
@ageha @RustyCrab @vriska by contrast I have been hearing very very bad things about contemporary scifi writing for the most part which is taken moderately more seriously (when did scifi start getting taken seriously, despite there being some good scifi in the past)
@ageha @RustyCrab @vriska it is very conventional thesis for a childrens book, wow I am just like the kid that is mistreated but is actually special but it's elevated to a very good version of that genre.
@sun @RustyCrab @vriska
here read a lot kids' stuff when small of course, lots also while library working to keep up on recommendations for child patrons, and then dipped in now then since
it's plodding and derivative, easily lost in the fog when read among peers. a contemporary competitor, doing basically the same thing but much better, is jonathan stroud's bartimaeus books

@anemone @vriska @RustyCrab you know what I'm a bad fiction reader tbh so I'll say it's better than slop. I can only compare it to philip pullman which I think is overrated tbh
@sun @RustyCrab @anemone @vriska
yeh, his dark materials has a good first book and then falls off a steep cliff, like speed-running narnia with themes reversed

@anemone @vriska @RustyCrab @sun
too begin with, yeh. lewis also an insufferable bigot, but narnia's better that way too

@sun @RustyCrab is that a euphamism for 🐎🍇
@anemone @vriska @RustyCrab @sun
meant better than hally port. for here lewis and pullman are basically peers that way, makes sense coming from the same milieu and latter intentionally echoing former, things that get in your head when young and then ouch back out again. guess if it saves some kids from religion that's a step in lyra's favour but
honestly even like redwall has more to it than hally port, though dunno could handle going back to at current age unless with kids to read to

@ageha @RustyCrab @anemone @vriska harry potter is a kids book isn't philip pullman a young adult book, different standard
@vriska @sun @RustyCrab We still think it's poorly written shit but sometimes you just get gifted a big and powerful retard who wants to fight your battles for free by God, so you just cheer for the retard as it mauls hundreds of enemies.
@anemone @vriska @RustyCrab @sun As I said, we don't like her or really agree with her, we just pretend to vaguely support her because the balance of effort in saying "I love harry potter" and how much grief it causes to the enemy is very very good.
@sun @RustyCrab @anemone @vriska I enjoyed them as a kid but with the caveat that I read the Spanish translated version, which was translated and edited by actually competent writers, and thus skipped the whole "she writes like I did at 9" part of the work. When I checked the originals I couldn't put up with it.
@vriska @RustyCrab @anemone @sun Would you argue that being super honourable and moral in the face of amoral hypocrites is a good and functional idea?
You yourself discard your own rules of engagement when you have little enough respect for someone.

@anemone @vriska @RustyCrab @nerthos hypocrisy is bad but it doesn't seem even as bad as an actually bad thing, it feels like americans are more bothered by hypocrisy than murder or whatever
@sun @anemone @RustyCrab @nerthos @vriska I'm not even sure Americans are against hypocrisy so much as they see hypocrisy as ammunition that they (who are also hypocrites) can use against other hypocrites and vice versa.
@thomasroiloup @RustyCrab @anemone @nerthos @vriska I agree that hypocrisy is grossly offensive to me but I have to get a handle on it not being as bad as the bad thing
@thomasroiloup
I can’t muster the energy to get worked up about every damn hypocrite when it’s in a sea of hypocrites. I hate it but can’t do anything about it.

@thomasroiloup @sun @RustyCrab @anemone @nerthos @vriska I mean, I am against hypocrisy
its especially interesting that whenever I am accused of it, its because I understand something fundamental that the other people just doesnt comprehend
