This is a great post and I think it's a good answer to "why should I host my own code forge if federation isn't ready yet?" There is still value in sharing, even if you don't have time for collaboration or a desire to turn the project into a community.

@gabriel @matthew @feld much of the software we still use was created by mailing patches and ftping tarballs - the forges are a nice gimmick, but not required. not having a forge might even act as a filter for low quality "contributions" now, it keeps away the people (or llms) who can't be bothered to write a mail.
