Okay, update on this. The exploit does seem to work even if 'lsmod | grep algif_aead' returns nothing.
I tested it on my local, non-production, Linux Mint Debian Edition 7 system.
Crazy exploit!
Now that means I have a bunch of work to do to mitigate for this.

Had a very pleasant phone conversation with this month's winner. He's an older retired guy. Former business owner. He was sick of Windows and started using Linux on his own a couple years ago.
So the computer I will be getting to him will have Linux on it (though he may erase and install his own). He prefers Linux Mint, but wants to try Zorin.

I still won't have to say this, as I use a Voice Over IP provider from my laptop and mobile hotspot for calls and texts.
I can use my desktop computers at home and work, too. I am not tied to a single device. I have zero stress about losing or damaging "my phone".
