@sun how will 3 letter agencies react to this?
@sun even doubles as a toilet paper holder
@mischievoustomato I think they're worred about high-resolution color printers
@mischievoustomato @sun Depends on if it prints "magic dots" or not
@sun I'd buy it, this looks useful
@fwc @mischievoustomato the firmware is going to be open source and the chip a raspberry pi zero so it's not probably going to be possible to enforce that even if they bake it in
@sun is this an april fools joke
Had to use a syringe to pull the ink from the ink tank the other day
> HP <
They're good for that.

@sun i'm pretty sure the reason why you can't get a good printer normally is because the FBI/CIA/whatever really doesn't want people having access to printing capabilities without the yellow tracking dots. they've struck deals with printer manufacturers to not print without yellow ink, and i'm guessing they require DRM cartridges for similar reasons.
though i doubt they can stop people from DIYing their own printers into existence. i doubt they can even make it illegal.

@sun this is illegal how
@sand I've heard it's just hard to make a mechanically sound printer
@noyoushutthefuckupdad @sun guaranteed it was manufactured before 9/11 and likely before the end of 1999
@sun @sand Inkjets are proven to death they can last decades (still have ma fam's first inkjet from 1998 and it still works), toner/laser issue's is the drum if not made of ceramic it will die quickly, otherwise I've seen black only hp laserpro printers being in service for 20 years. Wax printing has the advantage you don't need to heat up the material so high.
Otherwise yes all parts wear out but that depends on the specs of the materials you want to use, recent printers are landfill quality.

@sun
I'm ready to pay this 200quids if it directly works with FSF approved distro and gets the RYF cert. Even if it's disassembled and I have to assemble it myself.

The printer that only used black ink to print black text and other myths
Cute idea, buy why the stupid fax paper.
Just get a 10-20 year old laserjet.

@noyoushutthefuckupdad @sun
i have a 20 year old brother printer that works 90% of the time
i will be taking it with me in the grave

@sun it would be better if it were thermal, because ink is costly
@sun get rerady for patent trolling from big companies
@sun Epson and HP inkjet assassins have been deployed
