@sun i'm pretty sure the reason why you can't get a good printer normally is because the FBI/CIA/whatever really doesn't want people having access to printing capabilities without the yellow tracking dots. they've struck deals with printer manufacturers to not print without yellow ink, and i'm guessing they require DRM cartridges for similar reasons.
though i doubt they can stop people from DIYing their own printers into existence. i doubt they can even make it illegal.

@sand I've heard it's just hard to make a mechanically sound printer
@sun @sand Inkjets are proven to death they can last decades (still have ma fam's first inkjet from 1998 and it still works), toner/laser issue's is the drum if not made of ceramic it will die quickly, otherwise I've seen black only hp laserpro printers being in service for 20 years. Wax printing has the advantage you don't need to heat up the material so high.
Otherwise yes all parts wear out but that depends on the specs of the materials you want to use, recent printers are landfill quality.
