I think this was an interesting read on the subject from a Mi'kmaq lens.

I wonder if this person is a pretendian. If I ask Mi'kmaw people I know, will they recognize this person? I don't know why normies love trusting academics who claim to be native. Claiming a contemporary term like 2 spirit is a red flag.

Secondly, Indigenous people aren't a monolith. It's so insane to me that so many people completely disregard the distinct practices of several cultures in order to satisfy their own narratives.

People can be weenies all they want about the circle of life and how humans have primarily lived for millennia as omnivores, but at the end of the day Indigenous people are not causing overconsumption and deforestation.

@subnetter @sun Do you expect every Mi'kmaq person to know every other Mi'kmaq person? You yourself admit Indigenous people aren't a monolith immediately after opening with doubting the validity of this person's identity because maybe some theoretical Mi'kmaq may not have personally heard of her. You're completely disregarding the text to immediately attempt to claim this person isn't a real native.

Nowhere did I claim I was treating Indigenous people as a monolith, either, nor do I recall that being implied anywhere in this text. As I stated, this is presented from a Mi'kmaq lens, and I brought it up because it talks about the issue Sun was mentioning. There is a massive disconnect between traditional hunting practices and the modern meat industry. That is what this article is about, and that is what I was responding to.

@Starlight @sun if you are actually familiar with the history of Canada, fake bands such as the Qualipu, and consider the fact that this person themselves admits that their Veganism is a contemporary practice, then you wouldn't be surprised I am absolutely going to question their legitimacy.

Pretendianism is a huge issue in Canada and America, various academics have taken up space and misrepresented themselves as Indigenous and done irreversible harm. So no, I have zero issue with questioning it. And yes, our communities, pueblos, and bands are tight knit enough to sniff bullshit like this out because , surprise surprise we all know each other. You wouldn't understand. If I'm proven incorrect, I'll apologize but nothing in that article necessarily contradicts anything I've stated.
