I didn't argue you can't, or that it's not good people can jump into your replies. It is often good. Unrelated replies just shouldn't be dumped into your DEFAULT timeline.

might be nice to have that option, but honestly, about 50%+ of the threads I end up engaging with are because someone I follow responded to it. sometimes the conversation even turns out to be interesting and thought-provoking, though arguably a smaller percentage.
