@sun maybe they just want it as a fun thing for the conference , maybe every one doesn’t want to debate over the merits of saying nigger and open source drama about who was gay on Github
@technolyze you can make a rule against saying nigger and not block 3/4 of the world
@sun but then you will be spammed by 400 people saying nigger then debating you about the rule to not say it
@technolyze bigger picture this is about conformity and sanitization, delegating authority in the hacker community and it has natural difficult contradictions
@sun defcon has been corporate for like 20 years at this point and dark fedi is unironically annoying if you just want to have fun with a diverse group of people that don’t want slurs screamed at them the second they post their opinions.
@technolyze doesn't address my point

@technolyze also I realize technical mitigations are not perfect and never will be but if you used good software you can just automatically filter content via mrf etc
@sun @technolyze I have never installed Mastodon anywhere so I can't compare the setup pain, but the last couple times I set up Pleroma and/or Akkoma it still seemed mildly daunting somehow ... just my $0.02 on why so many people continue using Mastodon when it's objectively a bloated pile of shit
@deutrino @technolyze I actuallyt find updating mastodon to be annoying and daunting and pleroma seems easier, alhtough setting up pleroma is harder
@sun its been sanitized 20 years and even if it wasn’t sanitized dark fedi is a legitimately unwelcoming shit place for any one not spending half their time obsessing over muh white genocide
@technolyze I won't deny the degradation predates them making a mastodon server. I quit going many years ago but not because it wasn't edgy enough, the people there now are just not interesting lol
