add AI to everything so that "just turn it off" isn't an option anymore because "society will collapse". fast forward to 2030, just comply with the "AI" or you get the drone shooting squad.
of course turning it off would be completely possible, but that hasn't to be what people believe. "computer error" was a good excuse even before the slopwave.
