the speed is mostly for armor penetration characteristics that NATO wanted which are irrelevant for normal people

@tyler It was created in response to NATO PDW 9mm. Supposed to be smaller, faster, and able to defeat soft armor, hold more rounds, while being lighter and more controllable. Higher speed flat trajectory was the goal.
While all of those things might be true. It's ungodly expensive compared to 9mm.

Just have a good long gun & pistol combo that are broken in, clean & always ready to go, and, most importantly, be as current & proficient as possible on both.
Being ready doesn't mean shit if your iron isn't...and vice versa.

@tyler @catmanmancat it is a little bullet (5.7 vs say 5.56), if it pencils it will make a little hole, if it is rip roaring it might tumble or petal and make a bigger hole like out of a P90
but it is a pistol round, so it kind of doesn't matter as it will not have enough speed or ass to do riffle stuff
it has low recoil and can hold a lot in a mag so shoot until a small hole turns off something important or the small holes make the pressure too low to keep the lights on

Thing is, tactically and legally, we're aiming to stop the perp. If he dies later from some 5.7 rounds that doesn't matter for the purpose of stopping him from killing other people.
5.7 is marginal, but while I don't know about this particular round in general it's about 10% hotter than the hottest .22 magnum (rimfire). It's big advantage over them is it's centerfire so it avoids silent primer contamination, Unless you get a CNS hit, you have to hope just getting hit will be enough to stop the perp, and he's not for example a home invader but probably an ideological shooter. Or you get a lucky torso hit that starts bleeding him out.
But the bottom line as noted elsewhere is that this civilian and an off-duty State Trooper are believed to have deterred the perp from shooting more people, they got the job done as far as we know at this early stage. And likely will know, since there's no real case left with the perp then killing himself.
