@pinemarten the transport ships and escorts will have to pass a strait in between Queshm island (larger than Okinawa) and Iran, which is 5 miles wide and it's widest part, less than a mile wide at it's narrowest. It will be a total shooting gallery.
If they miraculously survive that without too many casualties they can still be targeted by Iranian missiles as they sail up to Kharg Island and if they by some miracle survive that, when they try their D-day style landings on Kharg island, they will meet a determined "near peer" foe, and if they manage to overcome that and establish a beach head, they will quickly find their positions were dialed in weeks ago by the IRGC as every available ordinance in the area is rained down on them.
And on top of all that any resupply by sea, would have to run the same gauntlet they just went through.
Resupply by air is impractical and just as risky.
