@theorytoe like many things in society, inertia. Working in the legal field now everyone only ever uses Word (or at slowly increasing frequency to distance from US tech, LibreOffice) and it is the worst. We aren't allowed to run any software on our computers that didn't come from them so everything that isn't Word is in a browser and it's all contractor churned garbage that doesn't work half the time so someone couldn't make LaTeX or even typst templates because we aren't allowed to use anything other than Microsoft Word

@sam @theorytoe i really dont remember word working this incredibly badly when i was a kid. I used it a year ago and i had to restart it every 30 minutes to resolve text rendering errors. I do not have this problem with any other text editor.

@RustyCrab @theorytoe that's normal you should expect your software to not work sometimes that's just how it works nowadays
@RustyCrab @sam @theorytoe Almost all MS software has gotten significantly worse gradually every year since around the time win8 came out (I suspect that's probably when they first started heavily outsourcing to the 3rd world). I remember the version of MS word I had in HS (prob 2010ver or something like that) actually worked and wasn't any slower than OpenOffice/libre office. Their UI however was always annoying though because it wasn't always logical where stuff was (and things like hidden menus and other bs was always a problem with MS software), but you eventually figured it out at least.
@icst @theorytoe @RustyCrab if there's one thing I hope for in the American century of humiliation it's that the places that say they'll adopt non MS shit actually do it and don't just remain at the whims of suddenly being unable to exist in the modern world because the US State Department says so like they're doing and have done to the members of the ICC being unable to use email or access their (non-US) banks
Everything in tech was originally written by White men, and now those systems are being maintained by 3rd world foreigners that lived in mud huts
