@RustyCrab there's a somewhat infamous anecdote, I don't remember who first mentioned it (it was probably Doctrow) that there was a brief conflict among Google management between the team that wanted to make search better and the team that wanted to cram as many ads as humanly possible as well as make search worse to artificially boost search count when they can't grow beyond their already 90+% market share
