It's a wild edible that's native to a good chunk of northern USA and southern Canada and requires almost no human input to produce. I'm in favour of it personally. But redneck fuckwits who like to rip around lakes in their speed boats (usually after consuming too much alcohol) get upset because it fucks up the propellers of their boats. So protecting the plant is also a benefit in terms of eliminating assholes and keeping lake country quiet for people who enjoy nature without the constant redneck retard presence.
