Dissent is the foundation of human rights period. Why free speech? So you can openly disagree without fear of reprisal. Why bear arms? So when someone won't take no for an answer, you can back it up. Why privacy? So when someone tries to stick their nose into your business, you can slam the door in their face. Why private property? So when someone tries to take the product of your labour you can tell them to F off. They're all just different ways to express dissent. When democracy isn't limited by those other more basic human rights, then it's simply gang rape by another name.
