@binkle It was common to do this with tight loop heavy processing scenarios. I'm literally doing this right now on a homegrown Scheme system, my Scheme compiler is not fast enough so some chunks are written in a regular Pascal-like procedural language that compiles to tight machine code. The high level stuff and policy is still all written in Scheme.
