I'm not gonna try to defend human sacrifice, but it is important to place it into context. The central theme involved was "nextlahualli" (debt-repayment) for the sacrifice the Gods made to resurrect the sun. The main source of victims was from ritual warfare (which Celts also did) called "flower wars" (the "flower" refers to the fountain of blood from the heart of the sacrificial victim). Victims were usually selected from among the aristocracy when not captives obtained (as part of international treaties) from neighbouring groups. Culturally it was considered a sacred obligation and an honour to the victims. Another example of this is the ball game "ōllamaliztli" where athletes would voluntarily compete for the honour of being sacrificed. That's not to say that everyone involved was a volunteer, but that predominantly in the context of Mesoamerican religion it was regarded as a noble virtue to be among the sacrificed.

As to human sacrifice in an Abrahamic context, just because it's not ritualised with the same degree of pageantry, doesn't change the fact that you can flip on the news right now as I type and see more examples than you can count of people being murdered with all manner of brutality in the name of Yahweh or the 2nd coming of pseudohistorical super Jew. That's hardly a sign of the times. It's been ongoing for thousands of years, as opposed to 65 to 70 years in the case of the flower wars. In other words, people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
