Can attest - 20 years ago I wrote Java for set top boxes. It was 10% functional code and 90% guardrails to stay in the 3B limit or perish.
@root I worked for Sun Microsystems, and can confirm. Back then we weren't quite there yet, so nobody had lost fingers to an exploding JavaME phone.

@root I ran Java back in the 90s but work recently uninstalled the Oracle JVM due to licensing changes.
