By using an LLM, one is following mainstream doctrine, supported by all the powers that be: companies and states that pour trillions into it, medias and assorted “leaders” that act as a relay for the “inevitability” and “progress” narratives.

And yet, we keep reading that LLM users “fear being caught up in an anti-LLM witch hunt” and similar things.

As if their choice was the one under attack.

@civodul Could it be that those worried about being witch-hunted are starting to feel guilty about helping to concentrate power in the hands of a few authoritarian organisations and helping to accelerate the climate emergency?

@condret @civodul @boud llm acceptance is actually inevitable even if people hate that fact, sorry for confronting reality. that doesn't mean it's inevitable they'll be used for everything or should be used for everything but you can run them on a gpu, if one thinks they're going to go away they're just an obvious fucking idiot.
@sun @boud @civodul @condret Overusage of LLM does have very negative effects and I do think that there is room for people like the OP to encourage people to rely on their human capabilities instead of leaning on The Machine, but that would involve actually being in favor of trying to make everyone around them better rather than looking for something to sneer at.

I've seen what LLMs are doing in the field of mathematics, and as far as I'm concerned, if they are the brain that gets us to the stars before we start running out of resources, I welcome their presence.

@skylar @boud @condret @sun @civodul They're mad that companies are calling their honor systems fake and gay when people have been doing it to companies for 40+ years now.

Information is meant to be shared. My problem with LLMs and training data is that they're not making everything public, and whoever it is at Amazon that decided to destroy rare books and use them as training data should be executed on the 50 yard line of a sold-out Jerryworld
