@mint so this is feasible but using prebaked images lets me add out of the box nice things like the qemu-guest-agent, local mirrors pre-installed, an fstrim timer, etc and it's a better experience than just "do it yourself, loser"

sure anyone can turn that stuff off anyway if they really wanted to but 98% of people will keep it. and things like backups will require at least the guest agent for freezing the guest properly for an actual working backup.
