art of Otto Dix (german), world war 1 artist

The first time i saw a illumination flare during training at night, there was a moment of disbelief for me. the entire world became like a fake movie, with fake lights, and fake shadows. Almost like a game engine showcase with moving, hovering lights casting as many stencil shadows as possible. The last painting depicts a lunar-like surface, which is what the cratered battlefield looked like at night when a flare was illuminating them.
