look up research on mate suppression. in animals it's usually seen in females but I think a twisted version can manifest in human males as well. basically they improve their chances of reproducing by inducing subordinate individuals to give up their own chances, in order to avoid aggression or to continue to be a member of a group. you see it all over-- in birds, monkeys etc. I think it's the same instinct.

@lain I think bringing it up shouldn't be shamed, if you genuinely want to do it, or try it out. If your partner is totally against it, then you have to figure out which is more important. Maybe they're worth sacrificing your feelings for, maybe not.
I'm lucky I didn't get into a relationship before this became a question for me.
