@lain I believe Russia will make it happen, they have plenty of experience from GLONASS.
@sun yeah, really makes you think
@sun @lain First obstacle is that being EU directive compliant is a large legal expense for any starting business. Second, the only driving force behind "sovereignty" is control; they want control over mass media and since most of the social media is US-based, they don't have much control. Hence why one of the first things they did was introduce locked down digital identity and then make a Bluesky clone requiring ID verification.
@sun @lain It's pretty funny to see that in the press you see a lot of Europe this Europe that while it seems like the Asians and Latinoamericans are super quiet...
But then suddenly you have the USG dropping press releases accusing the latter group of setting up "trade barriers" cus of indigenous payment systems and local currency exchange deals that bypasses the USD or something ![]()
@sun @lain People really struggle for explanations why Europe has become so worthless, so quickly. It was supposed to become a peer to the U.S. in the 1990s. That was only 30 years ago.
The explanations I read or heard fail to reach the root causes[1].
But if the U.S. declines _slower_, doesn't it make more and more superior to EU? Which is what we're observing.
