i had a genetics class in college that had the story in the book.
watson and crick were asking her to do some xray crystallography for them and they noticed the helix in one of her images that was lying around. she didnt realize what was on the film, but wouldve figured it out with a bit of work. they knew what it was when they saw it and basically snatched her discovery from under her nose. way it goes in science, especially for the research dicks trying to make names for themselves.
her major claim to fame is discovery of transposons (jumping genes) from her corn research.
the inca had a myth that man was made from corn, and here she was figuring out dna manipulation while doing research on corn.
