the trick to owning nice things is that you must derive enjoyment from it over time. it must be something that improves your life, makes it easier or more convenient.

the fallacy is that the desire of owning something pictures you using it and deriving enjoyment from it. the correction is to ask yourself how often you will use it and whether you own something from the same category already.

in pure entertainment, I go by expected entertainment value per hour.

I'm less stringent about things that involve self-improvement or self-actualization, spending on books one actually reads, courses one actually attends. sometimes spending money to achieve such goals is psychologically advantageous (higher motivation, focus, more perceived value).

how to value art? does it give you enough positive benefit seeing it every day?
