@coolboymew @hfaust I don't think they can make good software anymore, they arguably never did but there was some good engineering in Windows NT.
@coolboymew @hfaust as an example, the WDM layered driver model is better than Linux. And the kernel could switch opportunistically to realtime scheduling if an application (like video capture) needs it, something Linux still struggles with.
On the other hand microsoft had that giant crowdstrike outage because there is no privileged security api and they need total kernel access. macos has that, microsoft just didn't want to modernize until hundreds of billions of dollars of productivity was lost by their customers

@sun @coolboymew @hfaust and it's not like Microsoft really wants to eat this dogfood. The software is so awful that outright bugs or constant crashing would only be a blessing, as it'd drive people away from it. Teams is so bad that all competency towards it only prolongs the suffering.

Dave Cutler brought other DEC engineers with him and there's evidence they brought DEC code with them. Just read this yesterday after I did a quick search yesterday to confirm what I had heard years ago about VMS/WNT.
@Rocket @TeaTootler @coolboymew @hfaust yes that was part of the deal, microsoft was forced to port NT to Alpha. That actually ended up being good for Microsoft because they were going to dump portability, but they kept it because of that deal and later they released the xbox 360 on PowerPC

@sun @coolboymew @hfaust i know people give crowdstrike shit but any company with an IT dept worth its salt should have been able to handle something of that nature as part of their DR planning.
@hfaust Maybe next time don't have a GUI so bad I have to use Windhawk to make it usable for all my browser windows to not get condensed down, but then my registry breaks due to some widevine bullshit forcing me to wipe my whole C drive. On the plus side it cut out a ton of bloatware, but I lost Mirror Moon's translation of Fate Stay/Night in the process (I never remembered how that got on my PC on tte first place, it came and left by Fate).
