@coolboymew I took 4 years of french in high school and yeah they teach you Parisian métropolitain french in an education settings. They don't speak like that in Québec at all. France french is useful in France but in New England where there is a lot of franco dispora / descedants from Canada if you hear french it's mostly gonna be Canadian / Québec french. Otherwise the french you hear is mostly from african immigrants from the Congo.
Even if you don't speak french most people in New England are well aware of words like osti and tabarnak ( My grandfather loved to use those words a lot when I visited him as a child. ) My dad's parents could speak but they refused to teach their children or grand children the language sadly. More so because there was an anti-franco stigma that my grandparents experienced growing up where speaking french was frowned upon and punished if you did it in school, and after world war 2 there was a huge push to americanize the francophone dispora in new england.
