the reason you won't see real on-device blocking is because a dns whitelist would kill the ad industry lol

@sun They would (eventually) adopt a 1st party server side approach, which would make blocking harder.
Basically, when you visit a site with ads (example.com) then the site itself would serve you ads rather than some 3rd party domain (google ad network). This is a worse situation for the website and the ad company, but harder to block.
