@phnt @mushroom_soup years ago it was true, I don't know about today. but there are countless videos overlaying songs that all just sound the same structurally, and not superficially like "there's only so many progressions"
@phnt @mushroom_soup anyway my position is that AI music only threatens bad music because they are both bad music and thus in competition on how commodified it is, which is exactly what commercial music has always done. so human slop music is clearly going to lose in the long run. people crying about the artistic integrity of the top 100 chart lol
@phnt I get people not wanting AI crap injected into every part of the human experience, the problem is that this is just kind of the final step of a century long process of commercial entertainment and the final step is where you realize you were in the matrix the entire time and violently react to the threat of being unplugged.

@phnt I am slowly learning music composition (no composition help from AI but I'm using AI to explain concepts to me) and re-learning how to sing with my wife.
@augustus @sun @phnt but it takes a lot of knowledge to even know that means. People really underestimate how silo'd knowledge is, and how deep other fields can be. There are entire technologies like MIDI which everyone could be using all the time, but only musicians use, because non-musicians are oblivious to it. No gamedev making a spaceship game ever thinks: "hey what if I support cheap control surfaces with assignable knobs and wheels and faders? It's technically super easy and very tactile and immersive!" Try to push that and the best you get is a NIH proprietary joystick.
What is singing "in key" and how can you even tell if someone is in key or not? Where is the C on a keyboard? How long should songs be? Is this mix good or bad? What is a 'mix'? What do you mean this progression sounds 'unresolved'??

You can actually be middle-aged and start from zero in something that everyone knows and kids are already self-taught experts in. Which is nice in a way, after having been that self-taught kid expert in a different field.

@sun @apropos @phnt I think formal learning without the gritty nuts and bolts of knowing what feels right and where, through practice or whatever, is wasted knowledge. when you listen to lots of music and understand what's going on eventually all the unwritten rules just sink in and become second nature, and then at that point theory is useful to you at discretely expressing those ideas
@augustus @sun @phnt 'zero' is not even being able to discuss music because you can neither express yourself nor understand what other people are saying about music, and 'zero' is not even noticing the details of music to possibly internalize rules about those details. There's a lot that's not apparent until you start at least manipulating sounds, and for decades music consumers haven't even had equalizers.
