It's not even a psyop (or at least not in the way you're implying), it's literally just a case of the vast majority of users not giving a shit. Every single linux install I have ever used was wayland (kinda, though the Steam Deck is a bit weird in what it uses and even then nobody uses the thing for the desktop mode), and I've never had a single problem with it (though I've had plenty of linux problems that weren't related to the desktop itself). For the average person who is willing to use linux, it doesn't matter. The in depth details of what issues every protocol has are meaningless.
This isn't to say you're wrong about wayland, just that for most it doesn't matter and the fact these kinds of arguments even exist is so utterly damning to linux as a whole.
