Hmm. Maybe it’s regional then. It was always said as “nitch” when I was growing up. Only later did I hear people saying “neesh” was the correct pronunciation.

I've heard and said it both ways over the years, but more commonly neesh. I don't think either is incorrect.

“Neesh” has only been a pronunciation since the 1900’s. But the word has been in English since the 1600’s as “nitch”.
