I know the aristocracy adopted Judajism, but I think the whole debate about the Ashkenazim is another story. It doesn't seem to be supported by much evidence beyond a handful of activists and fringe talk show hosts who try to push that idea as a way of discrediting Ashkenaz identity.

Maybe it's true. Maybe it's not. But in my experience the types of people who insist on that are often the same people who believe in flat earth and probono proctologists from another star system creating the human race through genetic manipulation. It's a retarded sideshow that has little to no value beyond making criticism of Judajism look ridiculous.
Ultimately I don't really care: jews are jews and they've always been like this.

But the historical evidence does suggest the azkhenazim are khazars.

As for "the aristocracy adopted it." That's always how it starts. Same way most European countries "christianisation" was actually just a king and a few nobles kissing the ring for a trade deal.
