The dude made a good point when he said to train as if your life depends on it.
No, that doesn't mean having an overpriced AR with an ACOG and a bunch of Magpul shit bolted all over it and no, it doesn't mean you need to be that guy at the range who can hit all the targets on the QR pistol course five seconds after the tone sounds, either.
Just have a good long gun & pistol combo that are broken in, clean & always ready to go, and, most importantly, be as current & proficient as possible on both.
Being ready doesn't mean shit if your iron isn't...and vice versa.
