I don't know that I wholly agree with this. I feel there's a lot of gamers now that miss getting lost in a game.
Older games often used their directionless nature to make the world feel bigger than it was. It was around the PS1 era where games started to become more cinematic.
I've had friends play through Morrowind for the first time ever and just enjoy being relatively "lost" in the world. A lot of people are picking up older MMOs like FF11 and Everquest for their lack of guidance and reliance on community.
I don't think oldschool games are replacing modern ones, but I think people are appreciating the old styles again. It's ironically novel to a lot of people.
