Where has my based admin gone? I can already be identified through my National Insurance number. I don't want bad actors pretending we need ID cards to make deporting illegal aliens easier (it won't) or to bar people from using certain services/venues (remember March 2020?).

@thatbrickster@shitposter.world Yes, the notion that everyone carrying an ID on them increases public safety somehow is a myth.

@SuperDicq @thatbrickster I don't think you should have to carry it or that it should be required for most things. I think it should exist for things that need it.

@sun@shitposter.world @thatbrickster@shitposter.world I mean sure that's fair, but this thread was mostly about compulsory ID laws, as in a law that says every individual is required to carry an ID with them at all times.

How would that even work? If you don't have your id on you, they won't have any way to tell who to write the ticket to if they catch you without it. It's like the substitute teacher asking anyone absent during roll call to raise their hand.

@nicholas it basically works ok now in the usa where you are required to identify yourself and if it's a big enough deal that they really need to know, they have to detain you.

Not sure if same in every state, in Alaska you are only required to identify yourself if you are stopped while driving, so they have your plates for cross reference if you refuse to present id.

@nicholas every state sets this themselves but I think every state requires you to identify yourself to law enforcement if they ask you while performing their duties

@nicholas yes what I described was, if you say no they can detain you, if they have a reason. but you can't refuse. if you don't think they have a reason, you go to court to argue that later.
