godamn as good as this series is (you should watch it, it’s one of the most underrated anime productions of all time), it is upsetting to watch the second season of Legend of the Galactic Heroes because the parallels to what has been happening in america over the past 10 years are too fucking real

again, this was written in the 1980s. and them putting this fucking quote in the opening makes it even more terrifying

it’s terrifying not just because it shows the slow and protracted death of a democracy that has long forgotten why it was founded in the first place, but because of the way that every line of dialogue feels like a finger pointed at the US, including the way that a politician whose name starts with Tru gains influence no one thought possible until he got elected, signs the nation’s death warrant by simultaneously sabotaging international trade, reshaping the military by removing his opposition (“erasing the woke”), and instigating a war with an authoritarian regime that has been changing and expanding rapidly under new leadership
