Oh and btw the only differnce between shortwave and ham is frequency and modulation. The technology to exchange data packets via ham radio is the same technology to exchange it across short wave. There is just significant legal restrictions in the US for radio broadcasts outside of the ham bands. You can use the same modem and NPR you just need a radio capable of broadcasting on bandwidths outside of ham, an antenna mast big enough to bounce them off the ionosphere, and a capricious disregard for federal law to have Kiwi Farms delivered via shortwave to the UK.
